Evidently I had accidentally set the phone on Do Not Disturb
so all the calling it was useless.
- I finally got on the road to - OBX
- Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina
. On the way I stopped by a Planet Fitness, a library and a Staples
- Seventy percent of the post to whom I sent contracts yesterday replied by today :)
- This evening at a Wendy's in Nags Head, NC I planned my next week of days with three nights at the National Park's Frisco Campground.
- In the parking lot at the Outer Banks Sports Club, where I also spent the night, I reserved camp spots with my cell phone for the three nights at the National Parks' Frisco Campground (FC). That put me late getting to bed.
- Got to bed at 11:51
Sat Jun 4 = Today I mostly distributed the posters I brought with me at 13 locations from Rodanthe to Frisco here on the - OBX
- Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina
.
- I hung out at the Billy Mitchel Airport Pilot's lounge to do my email, unpdate my website and upload files from my last comedy show.
- Got to bed at 9:45 in FC spot P55 for shade until about 9am tomorrow.
Sun Jun 5 = Today's main event was kiteboarding southwest of Frisco on Sandy Bay, previously known as the Hurricane Sandy Washout. I was on/in the water for 43 minutes and went 4.4 miles with my Best 6 meter kite on my Custom Fish without footstraps. I made several starboard jibes and one portside one and ended up in the water chasing my board several times. It is the first time I rode on the board in 2 or 3 years.
- It was also the first time for me to use my new 7mm shortie wetsuit with a zipper from left leg to the neck. I cut about four inches off the sleeves to make it easier to don/doff and so my - Vivoactive
- Garmin smart watch that has GPS, specialty timers, heart rate monitor and is connected to my phone via Bluetooth
would fit better on my wrist.
- Before kiteboarding I had to move all my comedy stuff to my van's couch/bed because my kite equipment is in a subfloor compartment intended for the stow-n-go seats, which are back in my garage in Phoenix.
- I left things a jumble in my van, drove to my campsite, FC spot P55, where I mostly dried out my kite equipment and packed everything away.
- I topped off the evening by doing a little grocery shopping at the Avon Food lion, a 14 mile drive, stopping by the Haulover Day Use Area on the way, to tell people about Tuesday's show:
- Got to bed at 10:58, late considering I need to rise early tomorrow morning to call into Beach 104 FM (104.1 MHZ)
Mon Jun 6 = I was busy during the month of May. According to Google, here are the places I visited on my travels:
- This evening I reattached the Please Close Gate
sign on the chain link pedestrian gate at the Billy Mitchell Airfield using zip ties. The plastic plate I used to attach the sign with bolts a few years ago was mostly deteriorated.
- There seems to be a black hole in my van in the area of my emergency road reflectors. While I was getting my tool box out to fix the gate sign I found the second Sony ICD-UX560 voice recorder between the reflectors and the long-term storage tub. Since it had been lost for over a week, I had figured I wouldn't find it until I unloaded everything from my van in August back home in Phoenix, if I ever found it.
- Since May 19th I have had my checking account out of balance by a huge amount. This evening I went through it again and got it to balance perfectly. On May 19th I had failed to scroll to the credit union's last entry, but picked up their balance before it included the last few entries. This is the first time I made THAT mistake. Pretty creative, eh? Today I learned to double check that simple thing before looking for more complex things.
- Got to bed at 11:02 in spot B4 at the National Parks' Frisco Campground (FC) with no morning shade
Tue Jun 7 = It wasn't too bad this morning without shade here at FC spot B4. With some windows open, my back hatch ajar and sunshields in the sun-side windows I did OK until about 11am with the slight breeze.
- My merch signing was, as usual, an opportunity to tell people about tonight's show without selling any merch.
- Tonight's audience of eight adults had a lot of fun and were very appreciative of my comedy. After the show, up at Kitty Hawk Kites, they bought two T-Shirts.

- Got to bed at 10:45 in FC spot D2 with good morning shade until about 9:30
Wed Jun 8 = As I left the Frisco Campground I stopped at the gate to say "Hi" to the park ranger and the SnowBall Lady who were siting at the park bench and visiting. The latter said she'd like me to do a show for the community and could arrange it. Probably nothing will come of it, but I gave her my card.
- At the Billy Mitchell Airfield Pilots' Lounge I uploaded last night's files and updated my website.
- I must be living right. When I made my two deposits there in a freshly cleaned port-a-potty, the the blue juice
did not splash up onto me.
- On my way to South Carolina for tomorrow's show I ran my van through the Atkin's Creek Car Wash in Avon, went up to the
OBX Sports Club gym in Nags Head for a - poster trim
- weekly trimming of my beard, eye brows and little quiff so I match my poster photos
and shower, and then on to southwestern Jackson, NC for the night at a Walmart.
- Got to bed at 10:45 with a number of painful and itching insect bites.
Thu Jun 9 = I almost had an accident this morning. I had stopped (for 14 seconds) at a stop sign for a 4-lane road waiting for a break in traffic for my right turn. When the right lane was clear I proceeded. A black car darted from his left lane to the right lane without signaling. At the next traffic light a guy in his rear seat had the audacity to yell at me about stop signs. I yelled back about turn signals. It is all on my Old Shark Dash Cam
- I arrived in plenty of time to set everything up for tonight's show at the
American Legion Post 186 in Little River South Carolina.
- It was a good show with an audience count of 58 and the best semi-bar show yet. The people in the comedy seats were sparse but those at the bar listened, laughed and enjoyed the show. When a couple of bar residents started visiting and distracting, without any word from me, one of the hosts got up and took care of the situation.
- Got to bed at 10:22 by the post with power and morning shade.
Fri Jun 10 = On today's drive I stopped for gas, Goodwill where I did not find a computer cord, Office Depot for more show slips and Walmart for some groceries.
- Another first: The front of the room was about full by 6:15 for the 7:00 show at the
VFW Post 9133 in Piney Green (northeast of Jacksonville, NC) although most did not stay for the entire show. Lauren, the manager did an excellent job of publicizing the show. I have done shows at posts where no one was there at show time.
- What I learned at this show was to not let one person ruin my fun and degrade the experience for others. There was a table that was not listening. Later I realized that it was not the fault of the people at that table, but the fault of one person who felt it necessary to make a comment to his table mates after the jokes. Each time, he AND his table mates missed the next two jokes, because I do not slow down for inattentative people, only people from McGeehee. I avoid unnecessary words so the table missed about half the jokes. Also I am easily distracted and tend to lose my train of thought with such distractions. I called the guy out several times but, thanks to a few beers, he continued. I should have had him removed.
- As a result of all that, I have developed a series of put-downs for such people and a method of getting them quiet or getting them out.
- Got to bed at 11:19 with power back of the post under their canopy.
Sat Jun 11 = What a difference for tonight's show at the
Vfw Post 10400 in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC. The small audience of 14 came to laugh (not just to see a comedian) and it was in the post hall. They laughed and laughed.
- Courtesy of the post I refilled my van's running water system (six gallons)
- Got to bed at 11:17 by some trees for morning shade with a long extention cord.
Sun Jun 12 = Since I had power I unloaded all five files from my cameras for last night's show and backed up some video files to my second 5TB hard drive. I didn't get away until after lunch for the half hour drive to Oak Island where I did some grocery shopping before going to the
VFW Post 102268 Oak Island
- The show was was one of the best yet. Everyone stayed for the entire time and kept laughing for the entire 64 minutes. After the show they raved about how much fun they had. Of course I had fun also. Before I left they booked for next year, which guaranteed their choice of date:
Sa Jun 17, 2023; 7:00pm;
VFW Post 102268; 103 SE 50 St; Oak Island, NC 28465 -
- I got a lot of new friends and 14 new fans:
Kissey, April, Brad, Lou, Genni, Eveanne, Becky, MJ (the manager), Sylvia, Peter, Harold (Quartermaster), Trista, Donavon, Donna, Eric, Delores; VFW Post 10226, Oak Island, NC; 6/12/22
|
|
- Harold Wood, the Quartermaster hooked me up with electricity in a little space to the west of their post where I would have morning shade.
- Got to bed at 11:38. That wasn't the end of it. When I got up to pee at three, I booked tomorrow night in the Frisco Campground and then got up at 7:11am to phone into Beach 104, promoting my Tuesday beach show. Then back to bed for another 1.5 hours of sleep.
Mon Jun 13 = Driving day: On the way to my night spot at the US Parks Service's Frisco Campground I stopped by a shared branch credit union in Jacksonville and the Avon Food Lion.
- At the Billy Mitchel Airstrip I updated my blog, Fans web page and figured my next T-Shirt order.
- Got to bed at 11:06
Tue Jun 14 = I did a number of things HAD to be done this morning. At the Billy Mitchel Pilot's Lounge I ordered T-shirts and created seven posters for July shows.
- At the merch signing I sold no T-Shirts but received a $20 donation for Alzheimer's research
- It was so windy at the beginning of my Comedy-n-Sunset show that I had to use gallon jugs of water to keep my tripods from blowing over. The cameras were amazingly steady considering the wind. I forgot to put the wind cats on my video recorders so synchronizing the sound may be a problem. My wind cage did an awesome job recording the audio for the show.
- It was a good show with an extended family of 9 for the audience.
- Got to bed at 10:33
Wed Jun 15 = Busy, mostly office day:
- On my dash cam I found the video from June 9th when a car almost ran into me, changing lanes without signaling.
- This morning I uploaded all the videos from yesterday's Comedy-n-Sunset show.
- At solar noon, I drove to "The Bath House" and did a beach sun/run.
- Today's big project was sending nine Publicity Kits to the posts for my July shows.
- A little before sunset I did my - poster trim
- weekly trimming of my beard, eye brows and little quiff so I match my poster photos
and took one of the Frisco Campground's COLD showers. I was also going to get a haircut but ran out of time sending the Publicity Kits.
- Got to bed at 9:53, early in preparation for driving to Oxon Hill, MD for my son-in-law's retirement party tomorrow afternoon.
Thu Jun 16 = On the way north, in Nags Head, I went to the Outer Banks Sports Club for a brief light fast full body workout and to Staples to make 30 copies of my MD area shows.
- It is a good thing I planed to be about 1.5 hours early because the I-95 traffic used up over an hour. I made it to Roby's (my son-in-law) retirement party right on time.
- After the party I drove to a Richmond, VA Walmart for some shopping and for the night. From their parking lot in my van I could not get onto their WiFi, but could get on the Internet with Lowe's WiFi, but could not use it to upload FTP to to my website. Although Walmart was closed, I was able to update my website with FTP... with my computer on top of a trash can outside the store. With an updated website, I can remain, "America's Favorite Old Man."
- Got to bed at 11:51 :(
Fri Jun 17 = Tonight's crowd was a big one at
American Legion Post 368 in Newport News, VA, with one of the largest post buildings I've seen. They had three events going on and I got lost several times going in and out.
- The good news was I had a host as well as an opening comedian for the hour show. I went up at about 9pm and did 40 minutes.
- The bad news, was that it was a typical bar crowd, although the people that were in the "comedy area" had fun and bought a lot of T-shirts

- Got to bed at 11:57 - late, considering my long drive for tomorrow's early show.
Sat Jun 18 = Today was probably the hardest driving day for my tour, from a late show to an early show: seven hours for 445 miles from Newport News, VA to Hendersonville, NC.
- I stopped only once at a rest stop to run in, pee and fix some mixed vegetables to munch on the way (my only lunch, along with sunflower seeds to keep me awake). On the way, the Herndersonville post called about final arrangements and I decided to have the show in the hall instead of the bar.
- I arrived about 45 minutes before the scheduled 6pm show. They decided to move it to 7pm, so, in addition to setting up my merch table I had time to set up all my cameras. It was a good show with an audience of 14. Having it up stairs in the hall was a good call. Most everyone in the bar came to the show.
- After the show I uploaded all four (my wide angle audience camera did not work) of the media files, updated my blog and got everything put away and stowed in my van.
- They gave me an ideal place to park for the night by an "Employee Parking Only" sign where I had Internet from the post, 110v power across the driveway and excellent morning shade thanks to some trees.
- It was critical, that tonight, I reserved my Frisco Campground sites for the week to get one with morning shade.
- I struggled for almost an hour, but was so drowsy that I couldn't figure the the days I needed or find sites with morning shade on the reservation website, in spite that I had them listed on a notepad. I finally gave up, figuring I would be more alert when I got up to pee.
- Got to bed at 1:07am, experiencing some cramps in both legs and feet. I'll buy some mustard, which supposedly stops them.
- At my 3am pee, I was able to, fairly efficiently, reserve spot P055 (an excellent spot) for Mon through Wed nights.
Sun Jun 19 = Before I left the post I added these as my latest fans and did a bunch of other stuff like planning my stops for tomorrow:
Marc Jensen BrianWhite Lou Larry Barnwell Shuford Edminsten; American Legion Post 77; Hendesonville, NC; 6/18/22

- I got away from the post about noon and drove to spend the night at the Nashville, NC Walmart, quiet and with perfect morning shade. Of course I did a little shopping there.
- I think I'll start parking close to the door when I do my shopping. A couple of the Walmart staff saw my van's magnetic signs and enjoyed meeting me. Next time I'll park close for my shopping and, if anyone comments, offer to put them on my Fan web page.
- Got to bed at 10:12
Mon Jun 20 = Before breakfast this morning I went into Walmart, set my computer on top of a drink cooler and phoned Jody on Beach 104. I got on the air, of course, and also got a good recording from my computer on the station's website using Walmart's WiFi.
- I stopped by a Planet Fitness in Nashville for brief light then heavy full-body workouts. Took 50 minutes. Then I did a poo and shower.
- Next door was an Office Depot so I made and had laminated 1) an On Air sign to use when I phone in to radio shows and 2) my tour poster with no year:
- I arrived at Haulover on Hatteras Island about 6:30 where I told people about tomorrow's show and fixed and ate supper.
- Down at the Billy Mitchel pilot's lounge I updated my website and made cutouts in my new sunshield for the dashcam and Garmin GPS.
- Then down to my spot in the Frisco Campground, P055.
- Got to bed at 10:57 with morning shade until about 8:30
Tue Jun 21 = The little wide angle mirror I have attached to my left rear view mirror was hanging on by just the top edge, so my first job after breakfast was to reattach it with new, hopefully stronger foam mounting tape.
- It took a lot longer than I expected to pay all my credit cards for the month. Some of them keep bothering me with second factor authorizations when I am using the same computer as always.
- I ordered a bunch of publicity kits for my shows in July.
- We had good weather for tonight's Comedy-n-Sunset. Temperature was mild with a little breeze and no insects and an audience of seven... adults at first and a couple kids at the last for an audience of seven. I only did 45 minutes because I had used most of my clean material earlier in the show.
- I sold a T-Shirt after the show through the Avon Kitty Hawk Kites store.
- Got to bed at 11:05 in the Frisco Campground spot P055
Wed Jun 22 = Today I made some phone calls trying to get some comedy to do in Delaware to keep it as the 14th state of my tour since the American Legion in Seaford had to cancel. I spoke with Tom Sherman who sent me to Dan Bell . They are trying to start a comedy club in Delmar. I'll be with them, a half block inside Delaware:
Mon Jul 11, 2022; 7:00pm;
"Moon Cat Comedy"; 6 E Grove St; Delmar, DE 19940 - Workshop Open Mic
- This afternoon I tried really hard to get a haircut to look dashing for my Virginia shows, stopping at Gary's in Buxton and two places in Avon. All closed. Garry had slapped a "Closed for Vacation" note on the door although his phone message aid he was open. probably did not realize the inconvenience it caused.
- At the Frisco Campground bathroom "B" I did my - poster trim
- weekly trimming of my beard, eye brows and little quiff so I match my poster photos
and took one of their cold showers.
- Got to bed at 9:45
Thu Jun 23 = I got away from the Frisco Campground at 8:20am and hightailed it up to Kill Devil Hills where I got my oil changed at Tire Choice. I was impressed with their operation, although it is a long way from Frisco.
- The oil change took about 1.5 hours and I had a long way to go to Springfield, VA for the evening's comedy show.
- I made it just in time to set everything up for the show, but not to eat. It was one of the most nutritious meals at a post, with cold cut sandwiches, vegetables and fruits, which I ate after the show while packing up.
- The crowd of 35 laughed a lot, but as much at each other's comments as at my jokes. That is alright with me as long as they are laughing, but it will take some adjusting of my approach in the future to 1) recognize the situation and 2) to maximize the humor of it.
- They had a projector for my TV segment, but we never got it to show full screen. If I had thought of it, I would have tried different resolutions on my - Alcatel Plus 10
- The little 10" Windows 10 computer I bought to get me by in Tobago in 2017 after my Dell laptop died. It's tight, with only 2gb RAM and a 32gb SSD hard drive, but the 128gb micro SD card I have in it helps a little.
for the extended monitor, which was the projector.
- They let me pull up by the west side of their fantastic post building for the night where I had electricity, Internet and morning shade.
- Got to bed at 11:01
Fri Jun 24 = It seems that it took forever for me to get everything planned for today's short drive to Trangle, VA. I got away at about 11am and stopped by a Walmart for some food. I skipped the library - out of time.
- I did get a haircut so I will look dashing for tonight's show.
- The post's Internet was not working for a while and CoreFTP would not connect to my website with my computer through my tethered phone, so I had to update my website through my Hostgator control panel while tethered to my phone.
- I received an email, supposedly from Facebook with a recovery code to reset my password. Since my Facebook seemed to be working normally, so I assume it was a scam to get my information.
- The show at
American Legion Post#28 was a lot of fun with lots of audience interaction... and some new fans:
Aisha, May (awesome bar tender), Steve, Heather, Brad, Melissa, Tifferney, Donnie, Lou, KC; American Legion Post 28; Triangle, NC 6/24/22
|
|
- For my show, the post mailed a $500 check for Alzheimer's Research and scheduled me for next year. How cool is that?
- Steve there said he liked what I am doing and would like to help me do it, so I took time to show him some of the details of packing up from the show. That, along with scheduling this week's nights at the Frisco Campground, put me late to bed.
- Got to bed at 1:51 under their trees for morning shade, but no electricity, which it turns out, I didn't really need for my refrigerator.
Sat Jun 25 = I finally got away around noon, finishing my oatmeal breakfast on the way.
- In Fredericksburg VA at Discount Tire, I got my tires rotated. Their new electronic treadwear measurement devices evidently are not very consistent, maybe part of the result of uperator technique. Aneas read between 3 & 4 32nds while Tristin got 5. Aneas took time to give me lots of information about a new set of tires. When it comes time to replace the tires, I'll probably go with Yokohame YK-CTX tires, costing 3.7¢ per mile for the four tires (actual user milage, not manufacturer's estimate).
- Drove down to a Chesapeake Planet Fitness for elypitical, a slow heavy full-body workout and a shower. It was an experiment to see if I would itch after yesterday's haircut. Itching wasn't too bad, but enoug that I'll plan on a shower after my future haircuts.
- A Walmart was nearby and not too far from the Virginia border so I spent the night there with perfect morning shade thanks to one of their trees.
- Got to bed at 11:11 for a long night's sleep (10 hours and 24 minutes) with no alarm since I accidently set my alarm for PM instead of AM.
Sun Jun 26 = Driving down to the Frisco Campground, my "home" for the "week," I stopped by
Kitty Hawk Kites in Avon and picked up my order, 61 T-Shirts, shopped from
Design A Shirt.
- Then from the Billy Mithel Pilot's Lounge, I phoned Leo LaPorte's
national talk show to ask about the hazards of friending people on FaceBook. No hazard, evidently. We also talked about my tour and voice exercises.
- While I was on hold for the show I swept the loung's floor and processed my new T-Shirts. Collated with my on-hand shirts, they barely fit in my big merch box. For that to happen I had to remove my colored LED sign and my show compartment-clipboard.
- Got to bed at 10:09 in anticipation of getting up early to phone Jody In The Morning.
Mon Jun 27 = My before-breakfast project was to drive up to the Billy Mithel Pilot's Lounge for cell phone signal and Internet to call Beach 104. I timed myself, and it took 30 minutes from my alarm time until I had my computer and all ready for the phone call.
- The on-air interview was my 1341st comedy appearance and my 21st on that station. Thank you, Jody!
- Tracy, park ranger. came into the lounge to check things and take out some trash. Of course I invited her to tomorrow's Comedy-n-Sunset show.
- I have demoted my camping spot, B006 from a 9 (my highest rating) to a 7 because the morning shade did not last as long a I expected: only until 8:00. At solar noon I sunned 20 minutes in the privacy of my camp spot (so I could wear my skimpy Speedos) and did a 2.5 minute road run (not in my Speedos).
- In the "office" mode, I updated my Show Slips through July so they're ready to print out at Staples later this week as I head north for the American Legion Member Appreciation Show in Hagerstown, MD.
- Also I added the Banner Alzheimer's Foundation logo and a link to my Comedy Home Page. I also accepted about 420 FaceBook friend requests.
- In the afternoon I bought a loaf of bread up at Food Lion, and, at Canadian Hole and the next sound-side parking lot south, promoted tomorrow's show. I also stopped by the Beach Pharmacy and got acquainted with Matt, the new owner since April. Good luck, Matt!
- Got to bed at 10:22 in FCG'S spot B006.
Tue Jun 28 = Before leaving the campground this morning I refilled my van's running water supply and syphoned the accumulated condensed water from the bottom of my little Engel refrigerator (second time this trip). With the humidity here on the east coast it accumulates faster.
- After updating my website, I headed north, publicizing my show along the way, and ended up at the Avon Kitty Hawk Kites for my last merch signing for the trip.
- The comedy show was great, with a near-record audience of 31, according to the decated count of 8-year old Elijah. Most cooperated in sitting in the designated "auditorium" (bent trapazoid) that I had drawn in the sand so they would be close and hear me esily with my weak voice in the breeze.
- Here are some of the audience members with me:
- Organizing amd deveveloping more clean comedy bits is now on my list of things to do. I sort of ran out of family-friendly material after 42 minutes. Of course no one knew. They just enjoyed the show.
- I am a celebrity now. At the Avon Kitty Hawk Kites after the show, Elijah told his mother that I was "his new facorite celebrety." Of course he bought one of my T-Shirts.
- Got to bed in FCG at 11:35
Wed Jun 29 = Updating my Fans webpage turned out to be an all-morning project. Adding the group picture of 21 from last night's show wasn't a problem. Changing all the page's "picture width" to "picture height" for all on the web page went fairly smoothly. This means, in the future my Fan pictures will automatically adjust for the number of people in the picture.
- In the process, I discovered that David's hover pictures from 5/4/22 mysteriously replaced Luci's from 7/29/21.
- Another mystery is the location of the two Sony ICD-UX560 voice recorders that I have, for notes (ICD recorder A) and to use to record my shows (ICD recorder B). Of course latter has the audio from last night's show on it. About supper time I found the ICD recorder "B" in its wind cage. Still don't know where ICD recorder "A"is.
- I got all five files from last night's show uploaded to my 5T hard drive and got the drive backup completed.
- This afternoon's project was planning my next days of driving from the Frisco Campground to Saturday's comedy show in Maryland.
- I adapted Leo Laport's:
"Mother Made Me Match My M&MS" to:
"Monday Maybe My Mother Made Me Match My Many Mashed and Mangled M&Ms"
- Got to bed about 9:44
Thu Jun 30 = Thinking of the future (next year) and because I got up early (8:00) and because it was sunny, this morning before breakfast, I drove around the FCC (Frisco CampGround) and re-evaluated the camp spots with morning shade, recording the results on a campground map. Later I updated my spreadsheet so next year I'll have a handy list for optimizing my stay.
- I feel complete now. This morning I found my ICD recorder "B" down on the floor near my dresser drawer.
- I got away this morning at about 10am.
- All told, my contributions to the Billy Mitchell Air Strip this year included sweeping all the floors, reattaching A loose "Please Close Gate" sign and replenishing the hand sanitizer.
- On the way north from Frisco, I stopped by the 13 places where I left them to retrieve my posters. Only six still had them for me to retrieve.
- On north: In Nags Head, at Staples I printed out new Show Slips and at the Outer Banks Sports Club did a 20-minute heavy slow full-body workout, my - poster trim
- weekly trimming of my beard, eye brows and little quiff so I match my poster photos
and took a shower.
- Then all the way to a northern Newport News VA Walmart for the night with almost perfect morning shade. It was better going through the tunnel and through Newport News in the evening with less traffic, but that put me to bed late.
- Got to bed at 11:12
-
According to Google, here are the places I went on my travels during June, 2022:
