Sat Aug 1 = Around noon I arrived at the Lancaster AmVets Post 1985 and Commander, Mike Foster had set up the big room w seats for 36 at round tables. I added my two stage lights and four camcorders and the setting was perfect for the audience... of 11. It was a good group and a good show. I did the entire hour without straining my voice or getting hoarse. I think, when the post saw my setup, they realized that they were going to get a professional-quality comedy show.
- I sent Duet several hundred dollars for the last eight months of donations and merch profits from my comedy shows.
- Spent the night in the post parking lot after wrapping everything up and stowing the stuff in my van. It's a lot of work for an hour's show, but that's what I signed up for.
- Got to bed at 10:33

Sun Aug 2 = This morning I hung around Post 1985 in Lancaster for a while, planning today's drive and then headed south to Cincinnati. I went by an Anytime Fitness in southern Cincinnati for short slow heavy arms and torso workouts, then on to American Legion Post 69 in Reading (Cincinnati), set up my cameras and checked out their not-so-excellent PA system with wireless mic. It kept cutting out with no interference. It might have been my stage at the north end of the room or the way I held the mic, but we got by. The PA problems took a big chunk out of my show. Otherwise the numbers would have been a lot better. The audience laughed an average of twice a minute and was laughing 15% of the time. It's the first time I did a laugh analysis for one of my hour shows. That took over an hour and also took guts.
- Donna Asbrock took this picture before the show of me and my poster at the entrance of the post..
Lou w Poster
- The show was great, with an active audience of about 24 that came to laugh, as opposed to last night's subdued audience in Lancaster that came to just see a comedy show.
- I sold a record of six T-shirts. Some of the people even helped me load my stuff.
- Got to bed at 11:30 :(

Mon Aug 3 = After breakfast I went into the AL Post , offload all five media recordings from last night and figured my route, which included a stop for a car wash.
- I drove all the way to Vandalia, Illinois for the night at their Walmart.
- Got to bed at 10:35 :(

Tue Aug 4 = Today was driving-to-Wichita, KS day. I made it by about 6pm and found a Staples in western Wichita where I updated my
show slips
The little 2.75 x 5.5 inch slips of paper Lou passes out with some of his comedy information and upcoming shows
on blue paper and did a short light fast legs workout at an Anytime Fitness. I got in a rush and forgot to update my website while there and left without my tan wash cloth.
- For the night I found a neat place with nearly Dollar Tree, Office Max and a Walmart. It is BIG, mostly deserted, Kohl's parking lot with three trees, two of which provide good shade until about 1pm :) The one trucker parked there said he has been parking his truck there and has experienced no problems.
- Got to bed at 11:00 :(

Wed Aug 5 = Since three of my four video cameras split their videos into 4gb files, producing a show video involves three extra processes to combine the files for each camcorder. What a pain! The American Legion Post#69 show was a good one so this morning,in my van, parked where I have been spending the nights in western Wichita and in the shade of these two oak trees by a little lake,
Hazmat
and operating my computer on my inverter, I did the combining. It took over an extra hour :( I am going to try and find better camcorders to save all this time. After that I produced the 73-minute show, switching between the four cameras.
- The two little oak trees provided shade until about 2:30 this afternoon :)
- Before tonight's show I paid a franchise fee of about $5.85 to use the Planet Fitness in Northwest Wichita. I didn't have time for a workout but did get in a
poster trim
weekly trimming of my beard, eye brows and little quiff so I match my poster photos
and a shower.
- The 8:00pm monthly open mic was my 9th appearance at The Loony Bin where I typically stop on my way through Kansas. It was a fun show. I did my Silly routine, which they hadn't heard before.
- Got to bed at 11:42 :(

Thu Aug 6 = Today I finally wrote thank you notes to the veterans' posts in Lancaster and Cincinnati and got them in the mail.
- I, unknowingly, made a mess of the recent entries of my Past Comedy Appearances by leaving out three appearances. It took me a while to figure out what I had done and straighten everything out. I had missed adding three of my appearances. Thank goodness for my paper appearances sheet and my show audio recordings, which I also straightened out. I learned to do the update right after each show.
- I observed the 7:00 Loony Bin comedy show tonight, hosted by Wade McFarlin, featuring Brad Ellis and headlining Rick Gutierrez.
- Got to bed at 11:55 :(

Fri Aug 7 = Although Wind Guru was not forecasting it, the winds at Cheney Reservoir west of Wichita were SSW in the lower 30's, so I drove out for a little kiteboarding. It was neat to see my friends from previous trips, including Eric Fresh, Nick, Mark, Paul and his wife, Bobbi. I went out for about a half hour with my 8m Best Nemesis and twin-tip board. The winds were gustier than usual, the others said. - Of course, after kiteboarding I have to put it all back. Fortunately I didn't get my kite wet so it was good to pack away.
- This evening I observed both the 8:00 and 10:30 shows at The Loony Bin.
- Since it was late, I updated my website with my cell phone with one of the low-priority files that I had on the phone for that purpose.
- Got to bed at 1:56 am, due to the late comedy show. There goes my attempts for good sleep hygiene - at least for the next couple of days.

Sat Aug 8 = I spent most of the morning in my van, then did a little grocery shopping.
- It was a tough decision to not go out to Cheney Reservoir to kiteboard again today, but, although in the lower 20's, the wind was more south and less west than I like at M&M Point. By the time I got my Walmart shopping done, got gas, cleaned the inside of my van's windshield, the wind was decreasing some.
- So I went to the West Wichita Anytime Fitness. Low and behold, next door was what I had been looking for all day: an automatic touchless car wash. So I removed and cleaned the magnetic signs, washed my van, dried it off and put the clean signs back on. Gotta protect my van's paint.
- At the Anytime Fitness I took a shower, worked on this blog and did a slow heavy full body workout, since this is my last opportunity until I get back to Phoenix... and maybe until I get back from Alaska!
- I'm going to have to be more careful. I unintentionally missed Loony Bin's 7:30 show, but the final show of the week at 10:00 was pretty good. My week at The Wichita Loony Bin was a positive educational one for me.
- Got to bed at 11:40

Sun Aug 9 = I headed west at about 11am and drove 552 miles to Edgewood, NM. This might be the perfect place to overnight. The Walmart there allows overnight parking, there are trees for shade in the morning, there is no railroad for honking trains during the night and nearby is a Marathon gas station, which means fairly inexpensive Top Tier gas.
- Got to bed at 10:30 after updating the navigation for my April 2014 blog, using my phone.

Mon Aug 10 = This morning I fixed breakfast and then ate it on the drive. First stop, other than for jogging into rest-stop bathrooms and gas was Christopher Creek at
George & Cindy
my younger brother and his wife sold their house in Mesa, Arizona and are now in Christopher Creek.
's house. I knew they would not be home, but thought there might be some good shade for a little snooze. No dice, so I continued on to Payson to visit with
Rose Anne
My X wife who lives in Payson by a lake
. She fed me a little lunch and a snack (my treat day, ya know). Then I helped her with a medical portal on her phone and was on my way to Phoenix.
- I stopped by NextCare's Desert Ridge office and made an appointment for an Abbot Laboratories viral COVID-19 test on Friday. That is going to be dicey, considering they get their shipment on Wednesdays or Thursdays and usually run out due to the demand and their medical priorities. Alaska won't let me in without a negative result. Wish me luck!
- I just got home when
George & Cindy
my younger brother and his wife sold their house in Mesa, Arizona and are now in Christopher Creek.
arrived as planned. They were in the valley for an appointment. I helped Cindy with her Vanguard account while George napped on the couch in preparation for the drive back up home to Christopher Creek.
- I got the van all unloaded and got caught up on some stuff.
- Got to bed at 10:53 (: but had a very good night's sleep with only one pee and a maximum sleep of 7:43 hours. It was good to be sleeping with my CPAP again.

Tue Aug 11 = Today's big projects were 1) rescheduling my return from Alaska from an early morning flight to early afternoon (did it with Delta's Live Chat), scheduling my monthly credit card payoffs and talking to Alaska about doing more than my current two shows while there.
- I even found time to order a new water chamber for my ResMed CPAP and lay in the sun for 20 minutes at solar noon.
- During my trip I found the best place to put my sunshields was between my bed and my comedy stuff (L) and also found, when I got home, what a yam looks like after accidentally being left alone for two months (R).

Wed Aug 12 = Good day! I got two more shows scheduled in Alaska, both at veterans posts in the Matanuska Valley. Don Maupin, of the American Legion Post 15 in Palmer, has been a HUGE help.
- I did my laundry of two loads, grocery shopping and started packing for Alaska.
- Here's Don Maupin's poster for my first show in Alaska. What a guy!

Thu Aug 13 = No one seems to be able to guarantee that they can do a COVID-19 test and get the result back in time to meet Alaska's time frame. I added Walgreens at 11:45am to my list of appointments. Maybe one out of the three will pull through.
- I left a voice message for SunPac to see if I can get the broken shims that they were supposed to send me back in May for my malfunctioning tripod..
- Got to bed at 10:28

Fri Aug 14 = No packing today. Last night It occurred to me that I could Office Depot's online service to have 2x3' posters printed at their Anchorage store. So I spent most of this morning and half of the afternoon making an individual poster for each of the five posts where I will be doing shows. While I was at it I am having five ledger-sized (11x17") commemorative posters printed so everything will be waiting for me when I get up there.
- Office Depot's coupon code system is sort of a joke - very difficult to navigate. However, with Honey I finally got $30 off the $150 order.
- COVID-19 testing got really complicated. I paid two visits to the Desert Ridge NextCare office. In the morning I saw Juan and explained all the ins and outs of Alaska and the 72-hour requirement. Then in the afternoon at 3:45 they took the swab of my nose...

I am negative.   ALASKA, HERE I COME!

- At the Lancaster, OH AmVets, I snapped this picture of the organization of my Kia configured for comedy, looking to the right rear. One of the best things I did, after not finding a foam self-adhesive cord organizer, was to make specially shaped notches in the cardboard box to the right, just above the
LiFeMnPO
our van's Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen house battery
. Now I have all my USB cords organized and stowed in a neat row (right picture).
Hanging up, you can see the pants I wear for my comedy shows and the shirt I wear as my own host.

- Got to bed at 11:03 :(

Sat Aug 15 = I knocked my Reiner Speed i Jet 798 date printer over on my desk and the batteries fell out, which means I had to reset the date. I can't believe I lost the battery door and have no idea when or where. Black gaffer's tape will make a temporary one. I cleaned the print head with a fine spray of distilled water and a napkin since one of the print lines was missing, which made it streak. So far I have gotten 1,130 swipes out of the original print cartridge :)

- Today I organized some electronics and my clothes to wear and pack for Alaska.
- I carefully measured my nuts today and put them in plastic bags for the seven days in Alaska. I always take my nuts with me on trips. I just hope the TSA lets them go through.
- I was out of raw spinach, went down to 99 Cent Only for some, which they did not have, so decided to eat the rest of my Romaine lettuce over the next two days. I like to eat down my food before leaving on trips anyway.
- This evening I got my computer backed up :)
- Cutting my hairs (giving myself a haircut) before Alaska was on my list to do today. Since it was running a little late Instead of doing the deed, I laid everything out and got it all set up for tomorrow morning. Pretty smart, I think.
- Got to bed at 10:19

Sun Aug 16 = After breakfast I cut my hairs. Here's the result (with a quarter for size):
hair on floor
Then I took a bath and a nap. Before I got in the bathtub I noticed the washcloth weirdly suspended in mid water. Probably had some air trapped in its upper seam. You can see that it does not take much to entertain me.

-We have not had a dust storm for the 10 months since I took the seats out of my
Kia
Lou's 2020 Kia Sedona minivan configured as a mini-motorhome that he drives and where he lives during his road tours
and stowed them in the garage - lucky I guess. Finally, this afternoon I covered them with a big drop cloth, because the wind is kicking up, so we could get some dust. It's a weird feeling to be out at sunset in the wind... when the wind is 106° F.
- This evening I did my final packing, then took my computer back out to do this blog. The Haynes Eagle 44L, my personal item weighs 29.6 lb. Of course it contains four cameras, two tripods, power supplies, adapters, extension cords, clothes, nuts, Scottish oatmeal and raisins. Not to shabby for one personal item (a back pack)
Hanes Backpack
and my old faithful roller bag, as a carry-on, mostly filled with T-shirts to sell, weighs 25 lb. I did some bag lifts with it so I'll be able to put it in the overhead bin without embarrassing myself.
- Got to bed at 10:49:(

Mon Aug 17 = In the fraud department, this morning I phoned Citibank, about an hour project on the phone, and found that customer service could not stop the recurring fraudulent charges by Xfinity Mobile (about $1200), but could [hopefully] stop Citibank from automatically giving Xfinity the new numbers when Citibank sends me a replacement card. WHAT A MESS!
- The flight to Seattle went well. I think its the first time I sat on an exit row, courtesy of the gate attendant I chatted up before the flight about comedy.
- Then on to Anchorage. My row-mate, Jackson Whalen from St George UT was unbelievable with the Rubik Cube:
Rubiks Cube
- Don Maupin of American Legion Post 15 in Palmer picked me up at the airport. While in Anchorage we put up a 2x3' poster at the American Legion Post 1, and then went to the Palmer American Legion Post 15 where he had set up his camp trailer, my home for a week, here in Alaska.
Camp Trailer
- Got to bed at 11:44, Alaska Time (ADT) which was almost 1am Phoenix time (MST).

Tue Aug 18 = This morning Don helped me put up a 2x3' poster here in the American Legion Post 15 in Palmer, then drove me to the three posts in Wasilla to check them out and to put up their respective 2 x 3' posters. On the way home we did my grocery shopping for the rest of the week and he had a conference phone call to people around the world. That's what happens when you're important... even when you're on vacation.
- My comedy show was an interesting 66 minutes. Everyone was sitting at the bar which is back at the far end of the room from my stage, until Jackson, whom I had met on my flight, and his girlfriend sat down at one of the tables near the front. The audience was a lively challenge. Many of them wanted to participate in the show. I did not sell any merchandise, but it was my record furthest north show at 61.59° north lattitude :)
- After I packed up all my stuff, I blogged for yesterday. I must have been tired and not thinking well because it took me forever to get the camper picture to work, because I was trying to spell trailer two different ways.
- Got to bed at 11:23 after having a terrible time adding the image of my trailer home (above).>

Wed Aug 19 =For tonight's comedy show I drove myself in Donna Maupin's van, which Don loaned me, because Don needed to stay home with her after her surgery.
- Tonight's show was a lot of fun - the best so far in Alaska. The small audience of 26 laughed a lot during my 1:13 hour show. - What a mess as the result of a selfish and inconsiderate ass hole! This is the first time I have used that word on my website, but it is well deserved. A member of an American Legion post in Anchorage had brought in his brother-in-law from the lower 48, saying he was negative for his COVID-19 test, but the result had not come in yet. When the result did come in, it showed positive, so everyone at the post was exposed. Everyone who was at the post, including employees, may have to be retested and go into quarantine until their results come back. Also the post has had shut down... including the cancellation of my Friday comedy show, so I'll have Friday off.
- Got to bed at 11:20 :(

Thu Aug 20 = What to do with my Friday off? It would be a possible waste of time to process a video since I want to wait after Saturday's show and process the best one from my Alaska trip. So I arranged for an introductory flight with Fly Aound Alaska.
- After taking care of his wife and some business, Don Mauden took me to my show at the American Legion Post 35 in Wasilla. It was the first time that Don (to the right leaning on the dumpster) had seen live stand-up comedy, and for me, the first time to do a show in an open field. Made me think of Max Yasgur's Dairy Farm in Bethel NY and Woodstock 51 years ago. Except my audience of 32 wasn't Max' 400,000.
field show
- The show went well. The post went to a lot of trouble to sell tickets in advance, set up a special stage for me, a good PA system, power for my cameras, merch table and chairs for the audience members who did not bring their own. Thanks Dalmar, Adjunct, and American Legion Post 35!
- Got to bed at 10:54 :(

Fri Aug 21 = I went out to the Palmer Municipal Airport and Don Hammond's Fly Around Alaka to fly around and see the Knik Glacier which melt flows into the Knik River. Kezia Belisle was my instructor. Of course I did the flying. We did trade off taking some pictures with my cell phone and flying the airplane. It was a smooth flight until we had some moderate turbulance downwind. Amazently it smoothed out for the landing. We flew 60.79 miles in 54 minutes with a maximum of 123.8mph In our picture from the plane you can see the Knik Glacier extending from the Knik River between the mountains all the way to the horizon. Keep in mind, this is the middle of summer.
Glacier
- Late afternoon I took a nap with no alarm set because I was tired, having had a headache most of last night and today. I took my temperature and it was 98.5.
- This evening Post 15's complementary Prime Rib Special made a good dinner along with a self-service salad and cheesecake with raspberries and blueberries. My treat night, ya know. I hung around, working on my website and enjoying Karaoke by Mike and some of the other members.
- Got to bed at 11:24 :(

Sat Aug 22 = I figure I've got to get some exercise, so this morning before breakfast, I went for a little jog/run from my trailer up the hill to the post, across their parking lot and back: a 3:48-minute run with a pulse of 123 before I started back down the hill.
- I reviewed my last two shows for audience reactions etc. at 2.6 speed, which means it takes about a half hour per one hour show. I found some tweaks :)
- Tonight's show was in the large bar at AmVents Post 9 in Wasilla, AK. I did 62 minutes. Some of the bar group was a little noisy, but the core who came for stand up comedy appreciated the show. I raised $116 for
Duet
The organization I support and through which I take non-driving seniors shopping and to their doctors' appointments
in donations and profit from my merch sales. I even got a sponsorship for the post's poster, which means it did not cost me anything :) Their complementary steak dinner with all the trimmings was delicious.
- Got to bed at 11:15 :(

Sun Aug 23 = At 10 this morning Don Maupin picked me up at the trailor and took me on a tour of the area with a lunch at a little brewery in Talkeena, about 50 miles southeast of Mount McKinley (not!) The Native Americans got it renamed to Denali. It's still the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level. Then we drove on up to the Hatcher Pass summit, not far from one of the base stations for climbing the Denali. I used Don's phone since I had left mine charging in the trailer.
- From the Hatcher Pass Road, Don and me overlooking the Susitna Valley, which was carved by glaciers with a little help from the Little Susitna River. This panoramic photo was a technical experiment. Don started taking it with me in view, then handed the phone to me to continue as he moved into his spot at the end of the panoramic exposure (photos by Louis Self)

- Then on to Don's house for the evening where I joined Don, Donna and a bunch of their kids, grandkids, friends and their kids (30 in all) for a BBQ cooked on Don's special pellet grill. It was all delicious, especially Donna's famous shrimp (I think) macaroni salid.
- After the eats, I gave the kids a short introduction to how stand up comedy works, hoping that some of them may eventually become interested in it. Then I did a 10-minute show for all 30 people, including things that the adults would enjoy as well as the kids. I am going to start working on some kid instruction and examples.
- Got to bed at 10:38 for my last night in the trailer.

Mon Aug 24 = Phoenix here I come! Don took me to the Anchorage Airport. Before boarding I had time to update my Blog at arizonalou.com. The Delta Airlines flight to Seattle was at 39k' and 58° F outside. I forgot my meal bag (a favorite habit of mine) in Dona's van, so had to do with the Delta's Healthy Grains bars and chocolate-covered pretzels.
- I whiled the way time to Seattle working on my checking account and making the following:

- Got to bed at 12:19am (11:19pm Alaska time) back home in Phoenix with my CPAP for an excellent night's sleep

Tue Aug 25 = This morning I phoned Preferred Home Care because they sent me a water chamber and air filter for the wrong CPAP machine.
- I took a bath, washed my hair with Revlon Flex, my favorite, then flossed, brushed and water-picked my teeth in preparation for my dentist appointment and teeth cleaning. Marissa, the tech, said that I had surprisingly clean teeth. Of course. I take good care of them. That's why I can save some money and go 8 months between cleanings.
- Doing my shopping list and shopping at Winco and Fry's (for green grapes on sale) rounded out the evening.
- Got to bed at 11:11, kinda late but had another good night's sleep.

Wed Aug 26 = I drove all the way to north Scottsdale for an appointment with my dermatologist, only to find that there was no appointment. Supposedly their office had left me a phone message back around the 5th of August. That was when I was on tour in Kansas and they did no follow up.
- From AARP I found that sources for renting cars cheap, similar to Turo, are HyreCar Getaround. Back in December, 2017 I rented a Tesla through Turo, which is sort of the Uber of renting cars.
- I absolutely wasted over an hour analyzing the laughs from my show on the 19th. I used the sound from Video 2, which camera was toward the back of the room. What a mistake. The audience laughs were very subdued. I'm going to have to do it all over again and use the sound from my body mic, which clearly recorded both me and the audience reactions. At least I won't make that same mistake in the future.
- Also I did a manual spreadsheet of the Service Branch portions of all my Alaska veterans' shows.
- Got to bed at 10:37 :(

Thu Aug 27 = Today was a big trip to see my dermatologist and optometrist.
- Dr. Lamb, my dermatologist, thanked me for hunting him up hear at the North 27th Ave office, said he appreciated my coming in to see him and said he likes to see a familiar face. He found nothing.
- After the appointment I hung out in a back corner of the parking structure in my van office and analyzed the ratings of the vet segments of all my Alaska shows. I decided to produce the vets portion of the show from the AmVets Post #9 in Wasilla. Although neither my video nor audio recordings were up to snuff, the audience response was over the top.
- Then on to see my optometrist. He found my wet macular to be pretty stable, but an increase of my cataracts.
- This evening I continued stowing stuff. When I got back from my road tour there was no time to put stuff away before leaving for Alaska, so now I have to take care of stuff from both trips, while also taking care of more bookings for spring and processing the videos and pictures from Alaska.
- Got to bed at 11:00 :(

- It was interesting, but I spent way too long learning about the Castle Mountain fault northwest of Anchorage. The result was the additional picture I added, of the way the fault looks from the road (see Sun Aug 23 blog photos).
- Combining the segmented videos from my camcorders is a pain and takes some of my time and a lot of computer time, so I got that done with the VFW videos.
- I didn't go anywhere today.
- Got to bed at 11:51.

Sat Aug 29 = After breakfast I bought bread (100% whole wheat) at 99 Cent Only, then went to Desert Financial CU to get a stupid thing notarized so the City of Phoenix would send me $24 that they owe me, then to the CB Live Comedy club in Desert Ridge to take pictures of their posters and ask someone some questions about how club posters work. I hung around the patio outside, working on my computer for about an hour. The Internet said they opened at 11. Not so
- My big project this evening was to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau against Citibank. I figure I've dealt with them enough, to no avail, for the last five months, trying to get them to quit approving fraudulent charges... 20 so far totaling over $11k! However, they seem to be quite diligent about denying my small charges, for things like a car wash, due to suspected fraud.
- I went to bed tonight with my
XPS
Dell XPS-13 laptop computer with 13.3" touch screen, 60WHr Integrated Battery, Windows 10, Intel 7th Generation Core i7 CPU, 16gb memory and 1TB SSD
synchronizing the recordings of one of my hour-long comedy shows from Alaska.
- I was in bed then realized that I had not eaten any vegetables for supper. Of course I got up and ate my fresh spinach and THEN
- got to bed at 10:59 :(

Sun Aug 30 = I produced short portions of two of my Alaska veterans' shows when I was bantering around with the vets about the branches of their service. Then I produced the full hour show I did for the VFW post in Wasilla. I got it started uploading to YouTube. It will take almost 24 hours.
- Beside my house this afternoon I had a waterfall of sorts. My drip system sprung a leak to the south of my little bridge. The leak was supplying a generous stream down the gutter toward Union Hills.
- This evening I got all my Comedy T-Shirts inventoried and stowed. They were scattered in four places from my various trips. Now in two places, the shirt case I keep in my van for open mics with 15 shirts and the warehouse (my couch) where I have 32 shirts. All told I have 47 shirts. I am running low on 3XL with only one and L and 2LX with five, each of the two.
- The gaffers tape I use to tag my shirt sizes sometimes leaves a residue, so I am trying some painter's tape and also ordered a roll of 2" wide Post-It-Tape. We'll see how they work out.
- Got to bed at 9:59 :) for my weekly night without CPAP.

Mon Aug 31 = This morning I researched cataract surgery and came up with a series of questions for my optometrist. Mainly, should I get the surgery sooner or later. If I will need to have it done within a year, I need to get it done now so recovery won't interfere with my spring/summer road tour next year.
