Tue 3/1 - Yesterday Tim, from the Moon Valley LA Fitness Power Station juice bar, gave me a couple of his old blenders: a 3 amp Hamilton-Beach and an 11.5 amp Vita-Mix Palm Bay Club. These are commercial grade, so if I can get them working I should not have to worry about burning out my little Goodwill ones next time I make a batch of Protein Frosties. I Played around with the blenders and downloaded the instructions for the Vita-Mix Model VM0100A($450 new). It is an old one and the bearing is so worn out on its blade assembly that it leaks and rattles. I have concluded that the blade assembly cannot be fixed after attempting to seal it with faucet packing. I hate to toss out the blender because it has a big (64 oz.) "jar," which I need and is powerful (2+ peak horsepower), which will handle the tough job of blending my protein frosties. Yup, I could buy a new replacement blade assembly for about $150.00! Guess I'll have to go to more garage sales.
- Took Mildred shopping this afternoon. She bought more groceries on this trip than ever before, which made sense since the next shopping trip will be in about 15 days. When we got back to her house I helped her arrange her things for her "new" computer. Duet will be supplying the computer with dial-up Internet.
Wed 3/2 - Did two loads of dark laundry today and organized some things then went to see my dermatologist who checked me all over and biopsied a small suspect spot on the back of my right hand. They should phone me in a week or two with the result.
- For today's BIG trip I stopped by KFNN to pick up the two tickets I won to the Renaissance Festival. How did I win them? Yesterday morning I correctly guessed the number of World Series rings that Micky Mantle had when he retired. The successful high-tech strategy was to turn my radio down to avoid a feedback, voice dial the station just before they asked the question with my bluetooth headset in my left ear and listen to the station with an earphone in my right ear in order to hear the incorrect guesses of the callers before me. From KFNN I went to LA fitness for a quick but heavy workout, then to Jim Stack's (EAA president) to pick a LiFePO4 battery for me to test with my van's charging system, then on to Gangplank to catch up on this blog.
Thu 3/3 - Reconfigured the
- LiFePO4
- Lithium/Iron/Phosphate/Oxygen
battery that
- Jim
- Jim Stack, Arizona president of the Electric Automobile Association
loaned me from 36 volts to 12 volts for my testing; took Mildred to Bally Fitness; paid my property taxes online.
Fri 3/4 - Went to garage sales, most specifically looking for a blender jar for my .5 hp Vita-Mix blender. I learned to mention at the garage sales what I was looking for: in this case a blender. A couple of 'em had blenders they wanted to get rid of, but had not thought to put them out. I did not find the jar I was looking for (a rare item), but DID find a better jar (60 oz, glass) to use with my Hamilton Beach blenders.
Sat 3/5 - I discharged the
- LiFePO4
- Lithium/Iron/Phosphate/Oxygen
battery at the rate of 20 amps by hooking three feet of bare iron wire across its terminals. The wire was bright red hot for about two hours until the battery was down to its minimum discharge voltage of about 11.2 volts. Now it was time to do my first test to see if my lead-acid van battery would charge properly with the
- LiFePO4
- Lithium/Iron/Phosphate/Oxygen
in parallel. Both batteries charged properly!! Great news for my auxiliary van power project.

Sun 3/6 - I spent most of the morning researching battery combiners for my
Van Auxiliary Power Project. These are electroniclly controled relays that automatically connect and disconnect the "house" battery to the starting battery as appropriate.
- This afternoon I drove over to George's (younger brother) and we went to the Renaissance Festival which is heald for about two months on weekends. It may be my last time there. If I wait as long to go again as I did this time, I'll be pushing 90 years old, and maybe not kiteboarding any more. We took in some shows and I had my first try at trampoline bungee jumping. More
here on my TRIPS web page.
Mon 3/7 - Finished (I hope) my battery combiner research. With just a couple questions yet to be answered, I have tentatively decided on the Blue Sea SI-Series automatic charging relay.
Tue 3/8 - Got lots accomplished today: sprayed the weeds in my yards and the Krenshaw's west yard; vacuumed the house; had a good legs workout at LA Fitness, Moon Valley; went with Tim, from the juice bar there, for my first visit to Smart and Final; fixed all my meals for tomorrow for a quick get-away; put George's sketch of me up here on my website (see above).
Wed 3/9 - What a full day! Up early to the Arizona Red Cross Center to take their 8:30 - 5:30 First Aid,
- CPR
- cardiopulmonary resuscitation
adult/child/infant,
- AED
- automatic external defibrillation
class.
- Then to
- Jim Stack's
- President of Electric Automobile Association, Arizona
to return the
- LiFePO4
- Lithium/Iron/Phosphate/Oxygen
battery I borrowed last Wed for testing and for a final reality check from him of my
Van Auxiliary Power Project. He seemed to think all my research, plans and ideas made sense, and he ought to know. He also gave me some local resources for the project.
- Then to Gangplank to do catch up on this website and improve the links on my
Smart Stuff web page. What a long, but rewarding day!
Thu 3/10 - I phoned Dymo because my electronic date stamp reset itself to it's default date and time every day or two. The tech suggested that I pry up the negative clock battery spring. It fixed the problem. Now, why didn't I think of that! Went to Bally Total Fitness with Mildred for my arms workout and her seniors aerobics class.
Fri 3/11 - Something is wrong with my
- smart cell phone
- HTC Touch Diamond
. It showed no sign of life in one morning so I moved the SIM card to my Motorola C-139 stand-by phone and started using it. Not all the fancy features, but at least I have a phone to use.
Sat 3/12 - Today was pretty cool. I combined showing off my
- LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen
battery with garage sales. All I got at the garage sales was a talking pedometer. People at several stores have helped with my
Van Auxiliary Power Project, so I decided to show them some of the result. They were all very interested, as they had not seen such a high-tech, lightweight and efficient battery before. To add to the drama, I took in my iron wire and demonstrated how you could "short" a 2' length across the terminals, turn the wire red hot, measure the current at 25 amps and not damage the battery.
Sun 3/13 - I put my Motorola C-139 cell phone back in the drawer, after I got my
- smart cell phone
- HTC Touch Diamond
to charge, but it is getting warm and the battery is lasting about a half a day or for a few of phone calls.
- West Marine stuff is a little pricey (for my meager budget) but they treat me well. I drove over to their store (west Phoenix) and exchanged some things for my
Van Auxiliary Power Project; also started using my "new" talking pedometer, just for kicks. By default it tells you each 1k steps. You can also press a button to have it tell you the current number of steps, calories burned, distance walked and time walking. I don't think it is very accurate, but it gives an interesting reference point. Also getting it going allowed me to tap into my over-abundant supply of button batteries.
Mon 3/14 - Went to LA Fitness, Moon Valley, for my weekly heavy, 3-second-stroke arms workout and worked on my projects.
Tue 3/15 - I was pulling my phone out to dial 9-1-1 at Mildred's house this morning. As usual, I had phoned her as I left home: no answer. When I got to her house I rang the door bell: no answer. I phoned her twice from outside her carport door: no answer. I went next door and got acquainted with her neighbor to the east, who had not seen her so far this morning. We were to go shopping at 10am so she could be home in plenty of time for her 2pm hearing appointment. In the past she had always answered the door when we were getting together. I figured the police would come, break down the door and we would find Mildred in bad shape. Just before dialing 9-1-1, a taxi pulled up with Mildred in it. Thank goodness she was OK. She had gotten her appointment and shopping times mixed up.
Wed 3/16 - Last night I decided I should join Mike, my neighbor across the street to the northwest, in his moving sale this weekend, only mine will be a garage sale. In the middle of the might I thought about all the things I could get cleared out of the house and garage and some of the logistics. Sometimes it is difficult to turn my brain off. To that end, I located and bought a compact and lightweight 28" x 60" folding table at Walmart for $37.88.
- In the finance department, I shuffled some money to my emergency Money Market account, paid my two credit card bills, resolved my checking account. The first time around my check register was $4,000.00 low. I had accidentally put a deposit in my debit column.
- At Gangplank this evening I worked on this blog and did a show-and-tell of my
- LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen
battery, red-hot wire and all. About four, there, were very interested and asked lots of questions which I was, of course, happy to answer.
Thu 3/17 - I bought 4 Garage sale kits at 99 Cent Only store - better that making my own with boxes and foamboard - both more readable, although small (only 8.5 x 11" plus a 3 x 11" arrow), and consistent for all the signs. Mildred to Bally Fitness.
After dark, put out garage sale signs for tomorrow morning:
Garage Sale
Fri Sat Sun 7-2
Fri 3/18 - Up @ 5:59 this morning for breakfast and to put things out for my garage sale. Lots of activity; sold some stuff; Got logs of garage cleaning done. Today I saw some garage floor that I had not seen in about 15 years. Magically more space.
- This evening Harold Dean Hayes (x-brother-in-law) came over for our usual tech talk. Our topics included my Amazon Kindle, my
Van Auxiliary Power Project (his input and perspective were helpful) and his "new" side-car Harley Davidson.
Sat 3/19 - Garage sale is continuing with fewer sales than yesterday. The most significant thing that happened was a lady drove up on my sidewalk while she was making a U turn and clobbered my Garage Sale sign. Her reply, when I asked her if she would fix it was, "I'm sorry... no speak English!" The sign was marginally usable after I taped it back together. Meanwhile Able and his family drove up from Tucson to buy my van's 3rd row bench seat for $60.
- I installed the new battery I got in the mail yesterday for my
- smart cell phone
- HTC Touch Diamond
. We'll see if the problem is the phone or the battery (see 3/13/11 for details).
- To Saturday-night Hamfeast tonight: Golden Valley Chinese Restaurant, 832 W Baseline Rd, Mesa, AZ
Sun 3/20 - Garage sale conclusion started today at 7am. About 11am I started sorting the remaining items by area:
- Donate to Goodwill today (keeping it under $200 worth)
- Future donations
- Future garage sale items
- Craigslist items (mostly old photography & darkroom stuff)
Garage Sale Observations:
- Friday people started coming early & bought quite a few things; mostly guys; no traffic from noon to 2pm, except two guys who rang my doorbell about 2:30, wanting to see what was for sale. The moral is to not leave the curb sign out pointing to my house when the sale closes.
- Saturday there was less traffic, especially at first; more gals than Friday; not much traffic after noon
- Sunday was mostly dead at first, then gradually picked up. People kept coming and buying after 2pm, which was OK because there were still many items out that I had not yet put away.
- Got the garage straightened up, having about twice as much free non-van space as before, then went to the gym for a light full-body workout.
Mon 3/21 - Got my van's oil changed and garage sale money counted. The making of $184.90 at the garage sale was minor; the clearing out of stuff was major! I went to LA Fitness, got some final battery lugs for my Van Auxiliary Power Project across town at West Marine and attempted to donate two big boxes of post-garage sale items to Goodwill and Savers. No one would sign my receipt for the items (which I believe I would need in case of an IRS audit), so I loaded the boxes back in my van, still to be donated somewhere.
- The - LVD
- Low-Voltage Disconnect
arrived for my Van Auxiliary Power Project so this evening I've got my little van refrigerator and a couple of 6v light bulbs running through it to make sure it works properly. The LVD certainly is a cute little device. Just before bedtime I did the monthly blog roll-over in a record 25 minutes.
Tu 3/22 - Sent appreciation emails to West Marine's Corporate for Mark & Nancy who have helped me with my Van Auxiliary Power Project; the - LVD
- Low-Voltage Disconnect
quit working; got things ready for tomorrow's installation of the project.
Wed 3/23 - This morning I went to Councilwoman Peggy Neely's Bagels & Brew this morning at 7:30. No presentation - just sit around and visit. I did have a chance to visit with our City Manager, John Siefery, Assistant Street Transportation Director and a representative of the Sonoran Boulevard Project that will connect I-17 to Cave Creek Road when it is completed in 2013. On the way home I went to LA Fitness, Moon Valley for a legs workout.
- This afternoon at Todd's house, Todd and I discussed an overview of my Van Auxiliary Power Project, the component layouts jacked up the left side of the van and determined the locations for the holes through the floor in the back for the positive cable and the connection cable. Then we got to work. While Todd routed and installed the #2 AWG cable from the back to the engine compartment I worked on the van's battery up front. I cut off my positive battery terminal and replaced it with a multi-connector version and lugs. Also I made a copper plate to go from the new battery terminal to the 150A fuse block. Then Todd and I worked together by the engine battery. Tod hooked up the #2 AWG power connections to the battery-combining solenoid and I hooked up its ignition signal for activation. I felt good that my engineering of the project work just as planned.
- Today I learned how to crimp lugs onto big electrical cable with a 27" crimper and to use Noalox anti-oxidant joint compound that also increases conductivity. Things still to do are to undercoat the floor penetrations, install the gigantic battery plug in the back, the ground cable & connectors and, on the battery itself, the load sockets & controller.
Thu 3/24 - Up early to go to councilwoman Peggy Neely's Issues Breakfast. Phoenix City Manager, David Cavazos gave an upbeat report of how the city is increasing efficiency and studying cost cutting without curtailing programs very much. It sure sounded good. On the way home I drove out west and bought #2 gauge black cable and more red, searched six stores for a voltmeter for monitoring the - LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen
voltage and finally found a cigarette-lighter version at Bell Road RV that I removed the cigarette-lighter part and modified the circuit to use less only about 5 ma. I spent most of the rest of the day putting more pieces together for my Van Auxiliary Power Project. Today was mostly adding connectors.
Fri 3/25 - Mostly working on Van Auxiliary Power Project today, getting things attached according to plan to the battery with a combination of double-stick foam adhesive and safety wire.
The attachments include:
- Anderson Battery Connector (huge plug for #2 AWG)
- Refrigerator cigarette lighter socket
- Triple LED lighted cigarette lighter/USB socket
- LVD
- Low-Voltage Disconnect
/fuse box
- Voltmeter
- Battery Terminal connections for the #2, #12 & #22 AWG for the buss, load & voltmeter, respectively
- Stupid or smart?... but sort of fun. In the middle of the night (actually about 2:30 Saturday morning) I realized that I had to finish using the tools (gigantic crimpers, heat gun, connection paste, cable insulation stripper, cable cutters) I had borrowed from Todd so I could return them to him at the
- EAA
- Electric Automobile Association, Arizona
meeting Saturday morning, which meant I pretty much had to finish the installation. I got the ground cable, rear fuse block, undercoating and carpet tucking all taken care of and was back in bed by 5am. The project was now complete!
- I started the journey over two and a half months ago on January 15th when, at the weekly Ham Feast, I had a very interesting and informative discussion with Dennis Campbell (KA7VAB) about deep cycle batteries, controllers and solar for my van. He suggested probably NiMH would be better than Lead/Acid. In the process I got a lot of information from a lot of helpful people from the
- ARA
- Arizona Repeater Association (ham radio operators
and
- EAA
- Electric Automobile Association, Arizona
, thouroughly researched the charge/discharge and usability/safety characteristics of NiMH, AGM LA and LiFeMnPO batteries and various cargers and controlers to make them work with solar or not. What a job. What a deal. What an accomplishment!
Sat 3/26 -
- LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen
Battery Presentation today at the monthly meeting of the
- EAA
- Electric Automobile Association, Arizona
. On the way to the ASU Downtown meeting location, I picked up Harold Dean Hayes, my x-brother-in-law. The drive down there was the first actual road test of the
- LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen
system and the voltmeters indicated that it was working well. My demonstration also went well and there seemed to be a lot of interest and questions. To top off the demonstration and show it really worked, I had my little refrigerator running from the battery, set in freezer mode and with ice cream sandwiches for everyone who wanted one.
Sun 3/27 - Caught up on some of the things I put on hold while working on my Van Auxiliary Power Project, like vacuuming, clearing off the kitchen island and my desk. While in a straightening-up mood, I redid the Velcro Supply drawer of my van. Instead of a wad it now is organized by color, plane, sticky-back and double sided. The drawer now even closes easily.
Mon 3/28 - I refilled the yellow, cyan and dye-black ink tanks, hoping to get all the colors printing correctly so I could do a batch of business cards. No dice... yet.
- Returned the things I borrowed from Todd for my Van Auxiliary Power Project and watered in the preemergence by hand (ugh) since we did not receive the expected rainfall since I applied the treatment.
- Made a batch of six of my chocolate protein frosties, only added a little cinnamon. They should be pretty tasty, gauging from licking the spoon. My new blender setup is the best yet, although it is a real Hamilton Beach hodgepodge: commercial grade blender base from Tim at the LA Fitness Power Station juice bar; 60-oz glassjar
from a garage sale; jar nut, seal and blade set, from Goodwill.
Tue 3/29 - Today did not turn out as expected, but that's OK. It's all good. I went over to
- Mildred
- 95yr 1/7/11: I help out with her computer, take her to Bally Fitness weekly and shopping twice a month
's house early, before we would go to Bally Fitness, to decide where to put the computer that Duet is scheduled to deliver in a week. We decided the computer should go in her living room right where an overstuffed swivel chair was located, so, with her permission, I loaded up the chair in my van as a Goodwill donation if we found a suitable table or desk for the former chair spot. We went to two Goodwill stores, finding nothing that would do, and then on the way to a third Goodwill store, stopped by Big Lots where we found the perfect computer table which she bought for $45. We agreed we'd skip Bally Fitness, donate the chair at the first Goodwill store and then assemble the computer table instead. About 20 major pieces, a hundred screws, fasteners, plugs etc and an hour later Mildred's new computer desk was in place. She seemed to be pretty happy.
- Also today I printed out a bunch of business cards after I got all the colors printing correctly on my Canon Pixma iP4820. The cyan was still streaking so I replaced that tank with a new one and the printer is printing fine.
Wed 3/30 - Called HTC about my Touch Diamond smart phone and found I need to send it in for repair. Got it all boxed up ready to take to UPS tomorrow morning. Was going to ship it today but ran out of time, preparing for tonight's presentation and all the other stops on the way to Gangplank in Chandler. Found stores near there so was able to drive down before rush-hour traffic got too heavy. Picked up some groceries, including grapes for $.99/lb at Sunflower Market, then to Fresh & Easy for two microwave fish dinners and a box of ice cream sandwitches, which I put in my little van refrigerator, set on freezer.
- On my two-wheeled cart at Gangplank, I wheeled in the - LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen
battery powering the freezer for my demonstration. There was quite a bit of interest in seeing the end result of my project - especially in the ice cream sandwitches for which I got six takers. The presentation went well, with my little
- netbook computer
- EeePC 900HA
's desktop extended to a masave screen projecting my diagrams, photos, website... and, ofcourse, about 100 seconds of kiteoarding.
Thu 3/31 - Today I moved my AT&T SIM card to my standby Motorola C139 cell phone, shipped my
- smart cell phone
- HTC Touch Diamond
via UPS for repair, refined my
- LiFeMnPO
- Lithium/Iron/Manganese/Phosphate/Oxygen battery
demonstration presentation, figured the cost basis for the 5A I sold last year, worked on my website, wrote yesterday's blog, worked on emails (including researching kiteboarding for Matt en route from CO to LVS), did a couple pages of the online Boating Basics Class I am taking and went through the grocery adds in preparation for tomorrow's shopping trip.
